Volume 2 Issue 1: The History and Evolution in Microalgae in Human Nutrition

The History and Evolution of Microalgae in Human Nutrition

Throughout history, humans have looked to nature for sustenance and healing. Among the treasures discovered are microalgae—microscopic plants that have nourished and sustained life on Earth for billions of years. Today, these tiny organisms are making a big comeback, celebrated as one of the most potent superfoods available. Let’s journey through time to uncover the fascinating history and modern resurgence of microalgae in human nutrition.

Ancient Origins: Nature's First Food

Microalgae are some of the oldest life forms on Earth, dating back over 3.5 billion years. These photosynthetic microorganisms played a crucial role in oxygenating the planet, laying the foundation for complex life. For centuries, indigenous cultures across the globe have recognized the nutritional value of algae. The Aztecs, for example, harvested spirulina from Lake Texcoco, referring to it as “tecuitlatl,” a highly nutritious food source rich in protein and essential nutrients. In Africa, the Kanembu people have long consumed dihe, a sun-dried cake made from spirulina harvested from Lake Chad.

Rediscovery in the Modern Era

Despite its ancient roots, microalgae fell out of widespread use until the mid-20th century, when scientists began exploring its potential to address global malnutrition. Spirulina and chlorella, two of the most studied microalgae species, emerged as nutritional powerhouses due to their dense concentrations of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and essential fatty acids. NASA even considered spirulina as a primary food source for astronauts, recognizing its unparalleled nutrient profile.

The Rise of Microalgae as a Superfood

In recent decades, microalgae have gained recognition as a modern superfood, thanks to advancements in cultivation and processing techniques. Health enthusiasts and researchers alike laud these organisms for their wide-ranging benefits, from boosting immunity and enhancing brain function to supporting gut health and reducing inflammation.

Aphanizomenon flos-aquae (AFA), a unique species of wild-harvested microalgae, stands out among its peers. Rich in bioavailable nutrients, AFA has become a cornerstone of wellness for those seeking to optimize their health naturally. At New Earth, we proudly offer products made from organic wild AFA, ensuring purity and potency in every serving.

Sustainability and the Future of Nutrition

Beyond their health benefits, microalgae are also celebrated for their sustainability. These organisms require minimal resources to grow and can thrive in a variety of environments, making them an eco-friendly alternative to traditional agriculture. As concerns about food security and environmental degradation rise, microalgae present a promising solution to feed a growing global population.

Embracing the Microalgae Revolution

At New Earth, we are passionate about harnessing the power of microalgae to support holistic health. Our commitment to quality and sustainability ensures that every product meets the highest standards, allowing you to experience the transformative potential of this ancient superfood. By incorporating microalgae into your daily routine, you’re not only investing in your health but also contributing to a more sustainable future.

As we look to the past for inspiration and to the future for innovation, one thing is clear: microalgae are more than just a food source; they are a testament to nature’s brilliance and a vital part of our journey toward wellness.

STUDY UNCOVERS PROMISING NEUROPROTECTIVE PROPERTIES OF AFA

Study shows strong nutrient profile and antioxidant potential of AFA.

A 2021 study analyzed four algae supplements—Kelp, Spirulina, Chlorella, and Aphanizomenon flos-aquae (AFA)—for their nutritional content and antioxidant properties. The key findings of this study include:

  • Elemental Composition: AFA had high calcium and molybdenum, Spirulina was richest in iron, and Kelp contained iodine. Toxic metals (Hg, Cd, Pb, As) were found in trace amounts, posing no health risk to the user.

  • Isotope Analysis: AFA samples, sourced from Klamath Lake, Oregon, showed consistent isotope markers, but other products lacked clear origin data.

  • Antioxidant Activity: AFA has the highest antioxidative potential—4.4 times higher than Chlorella and 2.7 times higher than Spirulina.

The study underscores the importance of product quality and safety when choosing algae supplements, particularly for their antioxidative benefits.
